As President Barrack Obama continues to charge like a raging bull through his last 17 months in office, Mad Man feels that it might be an interesting exercise to observe what has happened in America under his leadership. Many on the right will attempt to diminish this man's accomplishments but what cannot be denied is their historical significance.
In review, the following are Mad Man's observation of what have transpired over the last 6 1/2 years under the extremely historical reign of the first African American President of the United States of America.
The Affordable Care Act - "Obamacare"
This will be the most defining accomplishment in President Obama's term in office. This health care bill has allowed millions of Americans the ability to afford health care without the support of the Republican dominated congress. The Republican led congress has tried to appeal this legislation at least 50 times with no success and it looks like it's here to stay. Furthermore, what is so wrong about taking taxpayer's dollars and providing health care for them?
Iran Nuclear Agreement
Who knows how this deal will eventually pan out, but at least it was negotiated and achieved during Obama's presidency. All that the warmongering Republican Party is doing is what they have become known for and that is to complain without an alternative plan, while wanting to go to war to solve conflicts.
Minimum Wage Legislation
Whether it was due to pressure from the white house or the people,
the movement to pay hardworking Americans more has gained momentum and this will benefit every aspect of American life. The employers will have happier and even more dedicated employees while decreasing the embarrassing stigma of being greedy and not caring about it's workers.
Reduction In Unemployment
At present, the rate of unemployment in America is approximately 5.7% which is down from a recession high of 12%. This is one of the reasons that wages have increased because it's becoming a worker's market. All of this happened under President Barrack Obama.
The Stimulus / Bailout of America
This was a mandated effort by the Federal government to keep the United States from going into default. There is no reason to continue to discuss the cause but President Obama acted swiftly and decisively in the development of a program that has allowed America to flourish. It's really quite interesting that everyone complains about jobs leaving the United States while also complaining that Obama's saving of the auto industry was a mistake.
Same Sex Marriage Legalized
How does that saying go? "We're queer and we're here." If America is to be truly the land of the free, then everyone should have the right to be who they want to be and live the way that they wish to live. Plus, the legal penalties that affected same sex couples were oppressive and unconstitutional. This is why the Supreme court ruled in favor of same sex marriage. Now, all that has to be done is for the bigots, who govern some of our states, is to follow the law, these recently freed Americans can begin to enjoy their lives just like everyone else.
Police Reform
Mad Man must give outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder credit for this because he was the "bad Obama" while policemen were killing Black people illegally and at an alarming rate. Police reform became a rallying cry for Americans and Eric Holder took the lead while allowing the president to work on other issues. This relationship ship also fit President Obama's personality to a "T". For years Eric Holder has been the guy that the Republicans hated more than the President and Mad Man applauds the Attorney General for not giving a shit about the bigoted white men in congress who tried to put this Black man in his place. This should go down as the greatest appointment that President Obama ever made.
Removal of the Confederate Flag From Public Buildings
"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me." It took the murder of 9 people by a bigoted white boy named Dylaan Roof to get Americans to look at themselves and realize that some changes in how we think about each other needed to be made. This flag is nothing but a symbol and a reminder of America's troubled past and should be in a museum. When President Obama spoke and sang at the funeral of Senator Pinckney, there should not have been any doubt in anybody's mind that they were watching the President of the United States perform in his unique glory.
A white President may or may not have been there, nor sang a famous hymn, but this funeral provided a unique situation that allowed America to see its top official as a human being and it meant a lot in the decision to remove the flag from the capital. The emotion, the hurt, and the empathy felt by all Americans made this a defining moment in President Barrack Obama's tenure in office.
Disparate Impact
In addition to this ruling by the Supreme Court against the State of Texas that appears to want to stifle the existence of any non-whites, there have been many more. But "disparate impact" simply means that if a state creates a law that provides a disproportionate amount of funds for home buyers in a black or Hispanic neighborhood versus a white neighborhood, it doesn't matter how you color it, it's still discrimination.
The Supreme Court
It is impossible to achieve greatness without a little luck and the appointments to the Supreme Court by Republican Presidents have been a windfall for President Obama, particularly Justice Roberts.
This court has upheld Obamacare, passed laws legalizing same sex marriage, and ruled against many pieces of racist legislation put forth by the GOP. Sure the Supreme Court has been very naïve when it comes to voter's right but in the end, this body of government has been very good to the President of the United States.
Summary
I know. You are asking yourself, when is Mad Man going to stop writing? I must say that I may have gotten a little carried away but I just wanted my Observers to understand that they are living in an era of one of some of the greatest accomplishments of any President ever and all Americans should feel proud that Barrack Obama did it with dignity, class, and against a resistance that would have broken most men.
He continues to show us how to live and maybe in his last 16 months of office he might just get some praise for his efforts.
