Black and White

One Saturday in February I wanted to see the movie entitle "Black and White" directed by and starring Kevin Costner. After searching all over the web, I found one theater in my area that was showing the movie. Not only was the movie difficult to find, the theater was even more difficult to locate.

This caused me to pause because if there ever was a topic that should be front and center in America besides the usual avoidance of discussions about race is the fact that based on what Mad Man sees on the streets and on TV, interracial relationships and marriages are exploding across America.

The movie dealt with an African American grandmother that was trying to wrestle custody of her
bi-racial granddaughter from a white grandfather that wanted to maintain a relationship with the only person left in his family. His wife and daughter had both died. The story ended with both sides agreeing to share custody and it exhibited some of the problems that occurs in these types of situations.

Again, Mad Man's observational antennae is heightened by the scarcity of this movie in more populated areas. It could be that nobody wanted to see it or the American public is still afraid of anything that will lead to an honest discussion about race. Based on what's happening in America today with our politicians still pushing and pressing that separatist button, maybe Americans just don't want to deal with the issue at hand and that is to discuss race to get it out in the open.

Black people are just as guilty because they still want to blame white people for their malaise in life and white people just don't want to talk about it because they feel that they are being blamed for something that their ancestors did.

"Black and White" was just a small baby step in bringing the topic to the public and although it's happening all over America, interracial dating is something that Americans are going to have to accept and embrace because if you are white and don't like "Pookie" now, what are you going to do when your daughter brings him home?
